The President's Room is a formal chamber just off the Senate floor in the U.S. Capitol, where presidents once met lawmakers and signed bills during the final hours of a congressional session. This view dates from between 1916 and 1917, when the National Photo Company was documenting Washington's buildings and monuments for postcards and souvenir views sold to visitors. The room's gilded, richly furnished interior reflects the Capitol's nineteenth-century taste for public display, and the glass negative captures that formal setting as it looked just before the United States entered the First World War.
