Titled as a blacksmith shop near the U.S. Capitol, this scene survives on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's streets and institutions in the early twentieth century. Dated to about 1919 or 1920 from neighboring negatives, it captures a time when horses still hauled goods and needed regular shoeing, which made forges like this a working part of daily life. The title is the company's own and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coating are visible across the plate.
