Taken around 1919 or 1920, this glass negative shows the U.S. Capitol during the years when the National Photo Company was building a large catalog of Washington views for visitors and other buyers. The building's cast-iron dome, finished in the 1860s, crowns the structure. The plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, a reminder that these glass negatives are physical objects as well as images. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
