The domed Capitol, seat of Congress, anchors this view of Washington, D.C., taken for the National Photo Company, a firm that sold views of the city's landmarks to visitors and publishers in the early twentieth century. The building's cast-iron dome, completed in 1866 and topped by a statue of Freedom, was the most recognizable silhouette in the capital. The negative is on nitrate film, and the catalog notes streaks and blemishes from the breakdown of its coatings, so some marks on the image may reflect its age rather than the scene itself.
