Many views of the Capitol exist, but this one pairs the dome with the Graf Zeppelin, the German airship that first flew in 1928 and drew enormous attention in the United States. The title suggests the photographer caught the airship passing over the city. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that sold city views in the early twentieth century, made many such images. Streaks and blemishes from the glass coatings' natural deterioration are visible, and the date is inferred from neighboring negatives rather than a firm record.
