Dated February 10, 1926, this glass negative records the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., at a time when the National Photo Company was documenting the city's landmarks and streets for visitors and publishers. Glass plates like this one were the standard medium of the period, valued for their sharp detail but fragile in their surfaces. Streaks and blemishes on the negative come from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings over the decades, so the image may look uneven in places. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
