Attorney General John G. Sargent appears in this January 9, 1926, view of a hearing held at the Capitol on the aluminum industry, a subject that drew sustained congressional and federal scrutiny in the mid-1920s. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that supplied news pictures to newspapers, made the image as a glass negative, a format that captured fine detail on the day's events. Visible streaks and blotches on the negative come from the gradual breakdown of its original coatings, so the picture's surface shows its age as well as its subject.
