The record places this glass negative at the unveiling of a statue of General Joseph Wheeler at the U.S. Capitol on March 12, 1925. Wheeler had served as a Confederate cavalry commander, later as a U.S. Representative from Alabama, and during the Spanish-American War as a major general of volunteers, so his reputation spanned both sides of the Civil War. The negative came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's ceremonies and public life in the early twentieth century. Visible streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect natural deterioration of its coating over time.
