Ceremonies honoring George Washington took place at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., on February 22, 1927, the date traditionally observed as his birthday. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the capital's public life in the early twentieth century, and its plates often recorded official occasions like this one. The original coatings have deteriorated, so streaks and other blemishes may mark the image. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947.
