A motor car labeled ARGO sits with the U.S. Capitol rising behind it, placing a new kind of street traffic beside the city's best-known building. The picture is a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington streets and landmarks in the 1910s, when automobiles were steadily replacing horse-drawn vehicles in American cities. The date is inferred from related negatives in the same range, and the title comes from unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating and are part of the plate's physical history.
