What sets this negative apart is its title, ARGO Auto, a label the record marks as unverified and that may name a vehicle or a business. The glass plate is dated March 28, 1915, and comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century. By then the automobile was spreading quickly through American cities. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its coating shows streaks from natural deterioration.
