Auto races at Bennings, the horse-racing and later automobile track on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., are the subject of this 1915 glass negative from the National Photo Company. The record's title says "Bennings, Md.," a reminder that the track sat just over the District line, in the Maryland countryside, before the area was fully absorbed into the city's street grid. Motor racing was a fast-growing spectator sport in the 1910s, drawing crowds to dirt and board tracks across the country. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington life for years, left behind a large body of such negatives, and the surface streaks noted in the record are typical of how glass plates age.
