Auto races at Bennings, the track on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., drew crowds of spectators in 1915, when automobile racing was a popular public entertainment in the United States. The record's title places the event at Bennings, Maryland, but the track sat just inside the District line, so the catalog's "[i.e., Washington, D.C.]" correction is the more accurate one. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city and its surroundings in the early twentieth century, and its surface shows the natural deterioration typical of glass plates of this age.
