Automobile racing at Bennings, a track on the eastern side of Washington, D.C., is the subject of this 1915 glass negative. The grounds were better known for horse racing, so motorcars competing there show how quickly the automobile was winning public enthusiasm in the 1910s. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital extensively in those years, made and sold images like this one to newspapers and the public. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating and are part of the object's age.
