Auto races at Bennings, the track on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., drew crowds of spectators in 1915, when motor racing was still a young and novelty-filled pastime in the United States. The record's title places the event at Bennings, Md., a label that reflects the record's own uncertain data, since the grounds sat within the District. This glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio whose work documented the capital in the early twentieth century, and its surface shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass plates.
