Auto races at Bennings, the horse-racing and later automobile track on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., make this 1915 view unusual among the capital scenes in the National Photo Company Collection. The record's title places the event at Bennings, Maryland, which was an error since the site lay within the District, so the location is best read as Bennings in the District of Columbia. The glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington street life, public events and sporting occasions in the early twentieth century. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from age, which are typical of glass plates of this era.
