Benning, a community on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., is the setting here, though the original caption placed it in Maryland, an error the title flags as unverified. The scene shows automobile racing, a sport that drew crowds to local tracks in the years before World War I, when cars were becoming faster and more common on American roads. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital extensively in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and the streaks and blemishes on its surface come from the age of the plate rather than from anything in the scene.
