This glass negative records automobile races, probably at Benning, a neighborhood on the eastern edge of Washington, D.C., though the location is listed as unverified. The National Photo Company, which documented the city's streets, buildings and events in the early twentieth century, made it sometime between 1912 and 1930. Early motor racing drew crowds and was still a novelty, so the scene offers a glimpse of how the city spent its leisure time. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
