Automobile races were held at Benning, a neighborhood in the northeast part of the District of Columbia, and this glass negative records one of those 1917 events. The record's title notes that the place name carries a Maryland label, but the site was within Washington itself. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed the capital and its surroundings in the 1910s and 1920s. Early motor racing drew large crowds and showed how quickly the automobile was becoming a public spectacle, and the negative offers a glimpse of that shift.
