An automobile wreck at the corner of 14th and T streets in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative, dated February 4, 1916. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, made many street scenes like this one, though the title comes from data written on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified. By the mid-1910s automobiles were still becoming common on city streets, so collisions like this one drew crowds and photographic attention. Faint streaks and blemishes on the plate result from natural deterioration of the original coating.
