Radio equipment is the unexpected subject of this view of Garfield Hospital in Washington, D.C., which dates to about 1924, when broadcasting was still new to most American homes and institutions. The hospital was named for President James A. Garfield, and its ordinary daily life is what the picture records. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington from the early 1900s into the 1930s, made the image. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass negative reflect its age.
