Few hospital views from Washington show nets draped over the beds, which is what sets this stereograph apart. The nets were a defense against mosquitoes in a city built on low, marshy ground along the Potomac, where malaria and other fevers were common. The record credits James F. Gibson, a photographer who later worked on Civil War views, and dates the image to 1860, although the Library of Congress catalogs it with the war's photographs. Harewood Hospital became a Union facility during the war, so the scene offers a glimpse of the wards that would soon fill with wounded and sick soldiers.
