Ward K at Armory Square Hospital, one of the large Union hospitals in Washington, D.C., is the setting here, with rows of patients laid out in their beds under the ward's high roof. The photograph was made in 1865 by James F. Gibson, a Washington photographer who documented the city and its military hospitals during and just after the war. Armory Square, named for the Armory building near the Capitol grounds, took in wounded soldiers from the battles of the Eastern Theater, and wet collodion glass negatives like this one required long exposures, so the scene holds still with an unusual stillness. Look closely at how the ward stretches into the distance to see the scale of care the city had to provide.
