Armory Square Hospital was one of the largest Union hospitals in Washington, D.C., and this view records its chapel and surrounding wards at the corner of 6th and B Streets. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate from 1865, the last full year of the Civil War, made by photographer James F. Gibson. Armory Square opened in 1862 in buildings near the Armory grounds and grew into a sprawling complex of wooden pavilion wards that treated wounded soldiers arriving by river and rail. Gibson's careful record of the grounds shows how the hospital was laid out, with its ordinary frame buildings standing in for a much larger medical effort.
