A military band posed in front of the officers' quarters at Harewood Hospital in Washington, D.C., in 1864, and that setting is what makes this view unusual. Harewood was one of the many hospitals the Union Army established in and around the capital to treat wounded and sick soldiers, and the city held dozens of such facilities by the middle of the war. The photograph was taken by James F. Gibson, a Washington photographer, using the wet collodion glass-negative process of the period, which required long exposures and so tends to render groups like this one stiffly posed. Bands were common at military installations, where they played for ceremonies, funerals and the recreation of convalescing men.
