Few Civil War images show the people who ran the wards as plainly as this one, which records officers gathered at the doorway of Seminary Hospital in Washington. The building was the former Georgetown Female Seminary, a girls' school that the Union army converted into a medical facility as wounded men arrived in the capital. Photographed in 1865 by James F. Gibson, the image was made from a glass wet collodion negative, and its stiff, deliberate poses reflect the long exposures of the period. It belongs to a body of work documenting the war's medical side, a subject that photographers pictured far less often than the battlefield.
