Few Civil War hospital views show the buildings themselves as clearly as this one, which records the Douglas Hospital at Second and I Streets NW in Washington. The site was known as Minnesota Row, a name that points to the state-funded barracks and row buildings that were converted to medical use as the wounded flooded into the capital in 1864. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate made by James F. Gibson, one of the working photographers who documented the city during the war. Washington's hospitals grew into a network of several dozen institutions by then, so this view is useful for seeing how ordinary buildings were adapted for the sick and injured.
