Few views of Civil War medical care in Washington show the grounds behind the buildings, and this 1864 wet collodion glass negative does exactly that, recording a row of hospital tents in the rear of Douglas Hospital. The photographer, James F. Gibson, was a Washington-based Civil War photographer whose work documented the city's sprawling network of military hospitals as the wounded arrived in growing numbers. Douglas Hospital was one of many such facilities ringing the capital, where canvas wards were often pitched to take in overflow when permanent buildings filled. The image gives a sense of how the war's medical burden spilled out of brick walls and into the open ground.
