The picture shows the ruins of Kalorama Hospital at 23rd and S Streets NW in Washington, D.C., a site that the record ties to the Civil War hospital system. By 1865 the city held dozens of Union hospitals that treated wounded and sick soldiers, and many were temporary wooden wards built on the edge of town. Photographer James F. Gibson made this wet collodion glass negative that year, and his view of a shattered hospital site reminds viewers that the war's medical burden fell on Washington as well as the battlefields. The image is a useful record of how quickly these institutions were built, used, and abandoned.
