Mathew Brady's studio made this 1865 portrait of Union cavalry officers of the 5th U.S. Cavalry, taken near Washington, D.C., in June, just weeks after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in April. Brady, the best-known photographer of the Civil War, documented both famous generals and ordinary soldiers, and his plates often carried the formal, posed look of studio work even when made outdoors. The 5th Cavalry was a regular army regiment whose men had fought through the final campaigns in Virginia, so the picture captures officers at a moment when the war was ending and the army's future was being decided.
