Few pictures in the collection show Whitman with a specific companion, and this one pairs him with Peter Doyle, an Irish-born young man whom the title identifies as a former Confederate soldier. The two met in Washington in the months after the Civil War, and their friendship, documented in letters and echoed in the poems of *Calamus*, was among the most important personal bonds of Whitman's later years. The albumen print on a card mount is one of the Feinberg-Whitman Collection's holdings at the Library of Congress, and it was included in the library's exhibition *Revising Himself: Walt Whitman*. Its informal pose, made in the photographic studios of 1865, offers a rare visual record of the relationship.
