This chromolithograph, titled "Lee and his generals," shows Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, grouped with the officers who served under him. It was published by W. B. Matthews of Washington, D.C., and registered for copyright around April 1907, roughly four decades after the Civil War ended. In the early twentieth century, colorful prints of Confederate leaders circulated widely as the country moved toward sectional reconciliation, and such images often reflected how veterans and their families wanted the war remembered. The record notes the copyright statement on the reverse, which helps date the piece.
