*Lee and his generals* is a chromolithograph published by W. B. Matthews in Washington, D.C., and dated April 11, 1907. Chromolithography, a color process that used a separate stone or metal plate for each hue, made detailed images affordable for homes and offices in the decades after the Civil War. Prints like this one helped carry the Lost Cause view of the conflict, which presented Robert E. Lee as a noble commander surrounded by devoted officers. Its appearance about forty years after Appomattox shows how Confederate military memory had become a popular subject for a national audience.
