Titled for the commander and the officers who served under him, this image centers on Robert E. Lee and the senior leaders of the Army of Northern Virginia. Its Gettysburg connection is the campaign that ended there in July 1863, after three days of fighting that cost the Confederacy heavily and turned the army back toward Virginia. Images like this were often made or reproduced after the war, when many former Confederates sought to present Lee as a noble leader and to shape how the battle was remembered.
