Few pictures in this gallery show the medical side of the war as directly as this 1865 view of a Sanitary Commission lodge for invalid soldiers in Washington, D.C. The United States Sanitary Commission was a privately run relief organization that supported sick and wounded troops alongside the army's own medical department. Lodges like this one gave disabled and recovering men a place to rest, get care, and wait for travel or discharge while the capital's hospitals filled with casualties. The glass wet-collodion negative was made by photographer James F. Gibson, who worked in Washington during the war.
