The record places this photograph at a lodge of the United States Sanitary Commission in Washington, D.C., in 1861, the first year of the Civil War. The Sanitary Commission was a civilian relief organization, formed in 1861 with government approval, that supplied bandages, food, clothing and medical help to Union soldiers and ran aid stations for troops passing through the capital. Mathew Brady, the photographer named in the record, is best known for his portraits of Lincoln and his battlefield views, and this print is part of the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection. The building itself is the focus, a reminder of how quickly volunteer relief work grew to meet the needs of a wartime city.
