Printed in Washington in 1943, this color poster carries the slogan "United we win" and was issued by the War Manpower Commission, the federal agency Franklin D. Roosevelt created in April 1942 to direct the civilian labor force as industry turned to wartime production. The picture is a photograph by Liberman, credited to the Office of War Information, which produced much of the government's wartime pictorial propaganda. Posters like this one aimed to recruit workers and keep them in factories and shipyards, and the photographic style was meant to make that appeal feel immediate and real.
