This drawing shows the foundations of the first United States Capitol, the level of the building that lay beneath the rooms and halls above. Its inscription notes that the upper part was burned by British forces, which occurred in August 1814 during the War of 1812, though the inscription gives the year as 1812. The plan was made for a set of engravings in the early 1830s, when Congress was still rebuilding and finishing the Capitol after the fire. Such views helped the public and Congress understand the building's original layout and what survived the destruction.
