Few pictures on this board show the civilian relief workers behind the army's medical care, and this one lists a group of U.S. Sanitary Commission staff posed at the entrance of a Washington building whose name is cut off in the record. The Sanitary Commission was a private organization, staffed largely by volunteers, that raised money and supplies for sick and wounded Union soldiers and for the soldiers passing through the capital. The photograph was made in 1863 by James F. Gibson, who worked in Washington during the war, using a wet collodion glass negative. The sober, formal arrangement of the workers at the doorway reflects how photographers of the period presented organized wartime service.
