Few addresses in wartime Washington were busier than the central office of the U.S. Sanitary Commission at 1333 F Street Northwest, recorded here in 1865 by Mathew Brady. The commission was a privately run relief agency, founded in 1861, that raised money and supplies and pushed for better hygiene, food, and nursing for Union soldiers, working alongside the Army's medical department. Brady's wet collodion glass negative captures the building as the war was nearing its end, when the commission's Washington headquarters was still coordinating a far-flung relief network.
