Men stand in a group before the office of the U.S. Christian Commission at Eighth and H Streets NW in Washington, photographed in 1865, the year the Civil War ended. The commission was a Protestant volunteer relief organization founded in 1861. It sent food, clothing, reading material and hospital visitors to soldiers in camps and army hospitals. The picture is a glass wet collodion negative credited to Mathew B. Brady, whose Washington studio recorded much of the war. That process required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate while it was still wet, which made field and street work slow and demanding.
