Few pictures from the Civil War capital show the unglamorous machinery of the war as plainly as this one, which turns the camera on the supply side of the Union army: the Medical Department's staff buildings and the wagons parked beside them in Washington, D.C. Mathew Brady's studio is credited with the glass wet-collodion negative, a process that demanded a sensitized plate exposed and developed on the spot. Taken in 1865, the year the war ended, the view records how much the medical service had grown to care for a wartime army and its sick and wounded.
