Gen. John F. Hartranft and his staff pose here as the officers responsible for securing the men accused of conspiring in Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Hartranft, a Pennsylvania volunteer officer, oversaw the prisoners at the Washington Arsenal, where they were held under guard while a military commission tried them in the summer of 1865. The picture was made by Washington photographer David B. Woodbury on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required sitters to hold still through a long exposure.
