Alexander McDowell McCook, a Union general born in 1831, is pictured here with members of his staff posed on a porch near Washington, D.C. The Library of Congress dates the print to the Civil War years, 1861 to 1865, when the capital was ringed by fortifications and filled with army headquarters, camps, and officers awaiting orders. Group portraits like this one were common among officers of that era, recording units and the men who ran them, and they often circulated among families back home. Its setting on a domestic porch, rather than a battlefield or studio backdrop, offers a glimpse of the quieter side of military life near the capital.
