Camp Barry, the Union artillery depot north of Washington, is the setting for this view of the 17th New York Battery. The date of May 1863 is an estimate based on similarity to other Camp Barry images, and the photograph is attributed to David Knox, who also photographed the 17th New York Light Artillery that year. Pictures like this show the logistics behind the field army, since guns, caissons and horses were gathered and readied at depots like this one before heading to the front. The print is held in the Library of Congress's Civil War photograph collection.
