The detail that sets this picture apart is its subject: a battery of the 17th New York Light Artillery, photographed with its horses still harnessed to the guns, somewhere in the countryside around Washington, D.C. In 1863 the Union capital was ringed by fortifications and camps, and batteries like this one were kept ready to move at short notice, so a picture of teams hitched and waiting captures the restless readiness of the defenses. Wet collodion glass negatives such as this were the standard technology of the period, and they required photographers to work quickly with heavy equipment in the field. The image is a useful record of how Union field artillery was organized and horsed during the war.
