Company M of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery, photographed inside a fort in Washington, D.C., in 1865, is the kind of soldier portrait that the capital's wartime defenses made possible. The city was ringed by a long chain of earthwork forts and batteries built after 1861 to protect it from Confederate attack, and heavy artillery regiments like this one spent much of the war garrisoning them rather than fighting in the field. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, the standard process of the period, and it was made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who worked in the capital during the war. The image is listed among the Library of Congress's selected Civil War photographs.
