Crandall's Theater stood at the corner of 9th and E Streets NW, in the heart of downtown Washington, where the city's commercial and entertainment life was concentrated in the early twentieth century. The theater belonged to a local chain built by the Crandall family, which ran several movie and vaudeville houses in the District during the years when moving pictures were becoming the city's most popular night out. The print comes from the National Photo Company Collection, whose photographers recorded Washington's streets, storefronts, and crowds between about 1910 and 1930. Its signage and street scene offer a useful view of how the downtown entertainment district looked before the 1930s.
