The Dumbarton Theater on Wisconsin Avenue is the subject here, set in Georgetown, the older community on the Potomac that was absorbed into Washington, D.C., in 1871 and kept its own commercial character long after. Photographed in 1913, the building shows a neighborhood playhouse from the years when movies and live entertainment were still sharing bills in many American towns. The picture comes from the James M. Goode Collection in the Library of Congress, part of a group of 1910s prints documenting Washington's streets and public buildings.
