Taken from the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge, this view looks down on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal where it runs through Georgetown, near the eastern end of a waterway that stretched about 184 miles to Cumberland, Maryland. Construction began in 1828, and the canal was built to carry coal and goods around the rapids of the Potomac, though railroads soon competed for that trade. Floods repeatedly damaged its locks and towpath in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and commercial traffic had dwindled to little by the 1920s. The scene shows the canal in the decades when its working life was fading and its future was uncertain.
